Cooking Korean Style

One of the adventures of having our boarding girls live with us is the opportunity to try foods we have never even heard of until now. Foods such as seaweed soup or kimchi have often graced our table. In the picture to the right, Yoo-Jin and Seulki, along with the two girls out of the picture – You-Jin and Myo-Chan, make their version of what we would call meatballs. This recipe calls for spicy tuna fish, sesame seeds, eggs, seaweed, lots of Asian seasoning and breadcrumbs. We all enjoyed making the dish…although Jin also enjoyed eating some of our “meatball” before they got to the stove.

Below Natalie leads a group of girls cooking around our stove. The atmosphere is always festive and they all share how their moms would cook something. They do like to cook in lots of oil so we buy olive oil in bulk. When the cooking was done we all enjoyed tasty “meatballs.” They were very, very hot, but very, very good.

All of the students take great pride in their culture and are glad to share their culture and food with us. On our part, we consider it a real privilege to have these girls in our lives and to be learning so much about a culture we virtually knew nothing about. We thank the Lord for all the students each day.

Once in a while the group of boarding students from the Academy gets together with dorm parents and host families to make a variety of foods unique to the student’s culture. The favorite food of many of our asian students is sushi wrapped in seaweed, pictured to the right along with a variety of other dishes.
