More Than A House
Raising children is always packed with responsibility, but as children grow older it is always a delight to see them share in some of those responsibilities.
As a host family for boarding students Dottie and I have been pleasantly surprised that students are more than willing to lend a hand in various household responsibilities. While their studies take up a good bit of their “free time” our girls are often in the kitchen helping Dottie or I prepare a meal, setting the dinner table and helping to clean-up after meals. What has been uniquely surprising to us is that we don’t even have to ask for help, they simply offer.
Last night was a good example, after Jin had made pizza for the whole family and after Seulki had helped clean up the kitchen, YouJin and her friend Ju-Hyun (it was Valentine’s Day!) offered to shovel our drivway – in the midst of a 22 inch snow storm.
This type of attitude has gone a long way in making our house more than a simple residence for the Academy’s boarding students. In many ways we have begun to function as a family…. and the credit goes to our girls who are simply delightful. As Dottie and I grow older we certainly have enjoyed their company, conversation, and late night laughter which they bring to our home, but we most of all appreciate their kindness, love and respect.
